Delhi Air Pollution Update: CAQM Revokes GRAP-IV Restrictions After Marginal AQI Improvement

New Delhi: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has revoked the strictest Stage IV restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the Delhi-NCR region after a slight improvement in air quality levels. The decision was taken following a marginal drop in the Air Quality Index (AQI), offering temporary relief to residents and businesses affected by the curbs.

According to officials, Delhi’s AQI moved out of the “severe plus” category and was recorded in the “very poor” range, prompting authorities to ease the most stringent measures. GRAP Stage IV is enforced when pollution reaches extreme levels and includes a complete ban on construction activities, restrictions on industrial operations, and tight controls on vehicle movement.

Relief for Construction and Industry, But Vigilance Continues

With the withdrawal of GRAP-IV, activities such as construction and demolition may resume under regulated conditions. Industrial units that were previously shut can also restart operations, subject to compliance with emission norms. However, CAQM has clarified that restrictions under GRAP Stages I, II, and III will remain in force to prevent a sudden spike in pollution levels.

Officials have instructed enforcement agencies across Delhi-NCR to maintain strict monitoring, especially at pollution hotspots, traffic corridors, and industrial zones. Any violation of the remaining GRAP measures will attract penalties.

Weather Plays a Key Role

Experts attribute the marginal improvement in air quality to favorable meteorological conditions, including increased wind speed and better dispersion of pollutants. However, they have cautioned that this relief may be short-lived if weather conditions change or emissions rise again.

Environmental specialists continue to warn that AQI levels classified as “very poor” can still have adverse health effects, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

Health Advisory for Delhi-NCR Residents

Despite the easing of restrictions, health experts recommend limiting outdoor activities, especially during early morning and late evening hours. Residents are advised to wear masks, follow advisories issued by local authorities, and use public transport whenever possible to help reduce vehicular emissions.

What Lies Ahead

CAQM has stated that it will continue to closely track AQI trends and weather forecasts. If pollution levels rise again and cross critical thresholds, stricter GRAP measures may be reimposed without delay to safeguard public health.
